British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
